Honey I'm Homestead - Old School Survival Boot Camp In The Hocking Hills Presenter Of The Day

Old School Survival Boot Camp newest addition to the 50+ hands-on survival, homesteading, off grid, bushcraft, and martial arts classes schedule - Brittany and Justin Sandlin of Honey I'm Homestead.

Last year Brittany and Justin Sandlin cut the cord and left modern society behind in late 2020. They, along with their three adorable young boys, are now living entirely off grid in a camper in the beautiful hills of southern Ohio. As Brittany puts it, they "said goodbye to life as we knew it and said hello to a hopeful, yet uncertain future!"

This young couple grabbed each other's hands and took a massive leap of faith. They launched the Honey I'm Homestead YouTube channel and Facebook page to document their inspirational journey.
"Although we’ve never traveled the roads ahead of us, we knew for certain staying on the roads we already knew were only taking us to a dead end or at best, a round-a-bout of stress and grief. Life is messy, I’m not saying the answer is as simple as packing up and moving into a camper off-grid with your family. The healing starts with bringing your problems to the forefront, acknowledging them for what they are, and then working through them.
What makes us different than everyone else? NOTHING! We had plenty of excuses to not sell out. We could have stayed in our comfort zone and everyone would have said we did our best.
Ultimately it came down to survival. We could not and would not have thrived in life if we wouldn’t have taken this chance. And chance it may be, but the alternative was inevitably doomed. We would rather go down giving it hell than sit down and settle. What’s stopping you? Grab the one you love and forge ahead!"

Brittany and Justin Sandlin chose a life that many folks dream of, but are not sure they have the knowledge, skills, or stamina to embark upon successfully. They feel the financial freedom paired with a minimalistic lifestyle has allowed them to really focus on what’s important to their family. They find great value working closely with the land, growing nutritious food, and having quality family time. We gave up luxuries like television, high speed internet, and long hot baths, but we’ve gained a new life changing perspective and a whole new appreciation for each other!
Justin and Brittany are passionate about raising heritage breed livestock. Brittany truly possesses the ability to look at a blank canvas and see what could be. She gardens on a large scale, serves as the butcher on the homestead, and is studying various methods of tanning.

Details about the class being taught by Honey I'm Homestead at Old School Survival Boot Camp coming soon! Justin and Brittany may not have appeared on television shows or have a nationally recognized name like some of the amazing expert presenters coming to boot camp this year - but it would be a good idea to go ahead and ask for their autograph now, this young couple is going places!

Herbalism Classes At Old School Survival Boot Camp In The Hocking Hills

For the many folks who are eager to know more about the herbalism classes which will be taught by the highly accomplished, talented, and generally awesome Jamie Schmotzer of JW Apothecary at Old School Survival Boot Camp May 14-16 in the Hocking Hills

Jamie details the five herbalism classes he will be teaching throughout the weekend:

How to make “Folk Method” tinctures…

My first presentation will cover the basic question of what a tincture is to begin with. Most of us know about infusing herbs in water to make a “tea,” but why would we use alcohol to extract plant constituents if we can do that with water? In this presentation I will show you exactly how to make a “folk method” tincture using 100 proof vodka, and I’ll discuss straining the tincture when it’s done. I’ll also briefly discuss how doses are determined. This is a basic level presentation.

Understanding Tincture Ratios

My second presentation will recap what tinctures are, and it will go beyond the “Folk Method” to discuss how to understand tincture ratios. After this presentation you should be able to understand how using precise ratios of herb to menstruum (a fancy word for the liquid used to extract the herb) and precise ratios of water to alcohol (the menstruum) produce more consistent tinctures. This presentation digs into the matter of solubility and what understanding that is important. As a bonus, I’ll also teach about “teas,” infusions, decoctions, syrups, elixirs, and the like. This is an intermediate level presentation.

Simple Tinctures, Compound Tinctures, & Herb Formulas

In my third presentation we will move into more advanced territory to understand what “simple” and “compound” tinctures are so that we can get into how to think about herb formulas.

Fire Cider!

In my fourth presentation I will discuss how to make a powerful antibiotic and antiviral tonic from common grocery store or garden ingredients. This is a subject that I know something about since I was featured in a book called “Fire Cider!” In this presentation I will discuss what Fire Cider is, what an “Oxymel” is, and what some of the health benefits of each ingredients are. I’ll discuss how Fire Cider is made, strained, stored, and used.

Herbal Bactine

Technically, I won’t be showing you how to make herbal Bactine in my fifth presentation, but I will be showing how to make a disinfectant liniment with herbs and rubbing alcohol (or moonshine) for topical use only. In this presentation I’ll discuss what a liniment is and why they are particularly useful - especially when it comes to cost effectiveness, making bulk batches, and an incredibly long shelf life. I’ll show how to make this liniment, strain it, and store it. My recipe is inspired by one by Dr. Jethro Kloss in his classic book, Back to Eden.

Final Thoughts

One of the reasons why I agreed to teach at the Old School Survival Boot Camp is because I come from a camping and bushcraft background. I don’t consider myself to be a “prepper,” and I’m surely not a homesteader. However, as an herbalist (and former Boy Scout), I do believe in being prepared. When Covid-19 struck, I had plenty of food and water stored, and I also had a well stocked apothecary full of herbal remedies. In hindsight, I now see how herbalism goes hand in hand with “prepping,” and I’d love to help get you on your way at the Old School Survival Boot Camp.
